This week on No Simple Road we are stoked to have Jude Smith as our guest. Inspired by class acts such as George Benson, John Mayer, and Michael Jackson, Jude Smith plays to a different tune than most. A Nashville native and multi-instrumentalist, Jude rose to Instagram-stardom through his guitar playing and musical content while showcasing his one-man-band ability - gaining over 100,000 followers in 2019. Since then, his self-produced EP's and string of singles have amassed over half a million streams, and bring to the table the timeless recipe of an irresistible melody mixed with charming instrumentation, a deep appreciation for groove and musicianship, and carefully crafted arrangements centered around his guitar playing - often being the sole performer on each track. Jude currently lives in Nashville, TN as an Artist and Music Producer. We talk to Jude about coming up and finding that music was the thing he is passionate about, leaving school to pursue his real interest, ways of caring for the artist inside, the importance of finding the fun in everything you do, and a whole lot more! The Peacock sitcom Rutherford Falls, which follows a conflict over a historical statue in a small town, is notable for a few reasons, besides its timely topic. It's the latest project from Mike Schur and it marks Ed Helms' return to TV. But it also centers several Native American characters (played by Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes), boasts what NBCUniversal claims is "one of the largest Indigenous writer's rooms on television," and is led by co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas, who is the first Native American showrunner of a television comedy.

Marie Ulven is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Norway, who makes music under the name girl in red. She just released her debut album in April 2021, but she already has a big fanbase and she’s gotten a lot of critical acclaim from two EPs and singles that she’s released online, including a couple that went gold. The New York Times included her work in their best songs of the year in both 2018 and 2019, and she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Norwegian Grammys. "Do you listen to girl in red?" has also become code on TikTok, a kind of shibboleth, to ask if someone’s a lesbian. In this episode, Marie breaks down the song "Serotonin," a song that started as a video she posted to her own TikTok in the early days of lockdown in 2020. You’ll hear the original version she recorded on her own, before collaborating with Norwegian Grammy-winning producer Matias Téllez, and later, with Grammy-winning artist and producer Finneas O’Connell, in order to finish the song. With the abundance of side projects, solo releases, and other one-off endeavors in this era of home studios and virtual collaborations, the term “supergroup” can get used a little overzealously. But considering the quantity of members from high-profile groups like Charles Bradley‘s Extraordinaires, Antibalas, the Easy Star Allstars, and the Skatalites, the phrase seems fitting for Big […]

For nearly a decade Julia Michaels has penned hit songs for the biggest acts in pop music. She is adept at turning people’s vulnerabilities into memorable hooks—think Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” or Selena Gomez’s “Lose You To Love Me.” There are countless others, but all of them share distinctive traits. Where many songwriters aspire to the simplest, almost nursery rhyme level lyrics, Michaels does the opposite. She crams as many words possible into each phrase. Her lyrics sound spoken. On her own hit song “Issues” she says “Bask in the glory, of all our problems / Cause we got the kind of love it takes to solve 'em.” Her rhyming may sound accidental, but it's a pop song illusion. Her idiosyncratic phrasing has symmetry, her rhyming is indeed purposeful, all to illuminate her primary subject: the infinite recursions of human relationship. After releasing three EPs and countless singles of her own, Michaels has just released her first full length album, “Not In Chronological Order.” Nate and Charlie try to identify Julias Michaels songwriting superpowers and then chat with her about her new album.
