This week on No Simple Road we are stoked to have Jude Smith as our guest. Inspired by class acts such as George Benson, John Mayer, and Michael Jackson, Jude Smith plays to a different tune than most. A Nashville native and multi-instrumentalist, Jude rose to Instagram-stardom through his guitar playing and musical content while showcasing his one-man-band ability - gaining over 100,000 followers in 2019. Since then, his self-produced EP's and string of singles have amassed over half a million streams, and bring to the table the timeless recipe of an irresistible melody mixed with charming instrumentation, a deep appreciation for groove and musicianship, and carefully crafted arrangements centered around his guitar playing - often being the sole performer on each track. Jude currently lives in Nashville, TN as an Artist and Music Producer. We talk to Jude about coming up and finding that music was the thing he is passionate about, leaving school to pursue his real interest, ways of caring for the artist inside, the importance of finding the fun in everything you do, and a whole lot more! The Peacock sitcom Rutherford Falls, which follows a conflict over a historical statue in a small town, is notable for a few reasons, besides its timely topic. It's the latest project from Mike Schur and it marks Ed Helms' return to TV. But it also centers several Native American characters (played by Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes), boasts what NBCUniversal claims is "one of the largest Indigenous writer's rooms on television," and is led by co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas, who is the first Native American showrunner of a television comedy.

For nearly a decade Julia Michaels has penned hit songs for the biggest acts in pop music. She is adept at turning people’s vulnerabilities into memorable hooks—think Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” or Selena Gomez’s “Lose You To Love Me.” There are countless others, but all of them share distinctive traits. Where many songwriters aspire to the simplest, almost nursery rhyme level lyrics, Michaels does the opposite. She crams as many words possible into each phrase. Her lyrics sound spoken. On her own hit song “Issues” she says “Bask in the glory, of all our problems / Cause we got the kind of love it takes to solve 'em.” Her rhyming may sound accidental, but it's a pop song illusion. Her idiosyncratic phrasing has symmetry, her rhyming is indeed purposeful, all to illuminate her primary subject: the infinite recursions of human relationship. After releasing three EPs and countless singles of her own, Michaels has just released her first full length album, “Not In Chronological Order.” Nate and Charlie try to identify Julias Michaels songwriting superpowers and then chat with her about her new album. Today is May the 4th, also known as Star Wars Day. The first Star Wars film spawned many sequels, TV series, videogames and a multi-billion dollar merchandise industry. So we thought it would be a good time to revisit our conversation about movie merchandise. In this encore episode, we talk about everything from Jar Jar Binks lollipops and E.T. dolls to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cereal, and more.

Shadow and Bone is the latest Netflix fantasy series based on a successful set of novels. There's a lot to take in — at least six main characters, people who can wield wind and shadow and light, a Chosen One who is prophesied to defeat a great wall of darkness, and charming rogues who are out for themselves. That may sound familiar, but there's enough here that's novel to make this series worth your consideration.

In Part 2 of this episode of Hit Parade, Chris Molanphy continues his analysis of Taylor: the country years, dissecting how she gradually, step by step, became the new queen of pop one irresistible song at a time. She went from interviewing bigger stars on MTV’s red carpet one year, to being the talk of the Video Music Awards the next—even before Kanye took that microphone away from her. He told Taylor he would let her finish, but the game was already over. Swift had the most played song in the USA. Podcast production by Asha Saluja, with help from Rosemary Belson. Michael B. Jordan has played a range of characters, from sympathetic figures like Wallace on The Wire, to an underdog in Creed and a swaggering antagonist in Black Panther. But Without Remorse marks a new era for Jordan as an action star. Based on Tom Clancy's best-selling 1993 novel of the same name, Without Remorse serves as the origin story for John Clark, an ex-Navy SEAL turned CIA operative.

If you want an example of the TV cop whose supposed integrity is maintained in spite of procedural, ethical, and moral lapses, consider Elliot Stabler. For 12 seasons of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Elliot raged and threatened and caught bad guys, and he still got to be drawn as the good guy. In Law & Order: Organized Crime, Stabler is battling a wealthy shadowy criminal, and also recovering from a personal tragedy that's left him more angry than ever.

What do Will Ferrell and Leslie Odom, Jr. have in common? They both play a part in the Academy Awards' Best Original Song category. This year's five nominated songs are stacked with star power and grand themes of fighting for justice, as well as a sweeping power ballad about mountains singing "through the screams of seagulls."

We’ll be live on Facebook next Monday, 5/3/21 at 9:30pm EST. Join us at Greg has just returned from a four show tour in Texas with the Red Not Chili Peppers & reports back on the trip. The crowds were wonderful & generous in their appreciation for the live music (except for this one guy in Dallas) & Greg shares all sorts of fun stories. Also, we highly recommend everyone get vaccinated!Song: Khruangbin - “Mr. White”Jay has a slew of music podcasts he’s been really enjoying lately and shares them with us today. The Blues Kitchen is a Spotify exclusive podcast about blues & rock from the past 80 years. features fantastic musician interviews by Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell & Bruce Headlam. Jay describes as “Hardcore History” for Country Music. The project is the brainchild of Tyler Mahan Coe and, in each episode, he takes an extremely deep dive into a Country music artist or song or album.Song: The Felice Brothers - “Inferno”Nick was infuriated by a recent article about the Small Business Administration’s announcement that they’ve relaunched a portal to allow independent venues to apply for relief…a mere 13 months after closing their doors due to COVID restrictions. Rather than complain about the delay, the guys discuss how much they think the federal government should be helping musicians & whether bailing out small businesses is the right use of money….it’s quite contentious but hopefully enjoyable :-)Song: Kurt Vile - “One Trick Ponies”

Félix B. Desfossés & Ian Campbell the creators of No Speed Limit: Québec Metal & I have a conversation about their 1st brews, their 1st shows, the evolution of the Québec Metal Scene, why they chose to write a book, the biggest challenges, translating it to English & their hangover cure. Throughout this interview, Félix was drinking Hopfenstark Brewery x Voivod 's "Lost Machine"! This SteinBier which is a traditional German style brew which is made by heating up rocks in a fire that are later placed in the wort was fantastic! Thanks to that unique process it has a more caramel & mineral flavor profile while remaining a crisp & crushable brew! It clocks in with a 5% ABV. Ian was drinking absolutely nothing because that is how Metal he is!!! While I was enjoying Le Trèfle Noir Brasserie Artisanale 's "Chernoe Pivo" the Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon Barrels. This phenomenal brew poured out with a thick black veil, smashed a booze driven nose, ripped a slightly sweet, chocolatey & coffee finish with a bourbon bite. It clocked in with a 8.7% ABV. This is a Heavy Montreal presents Vox&Hops episode! Heavy Montreal is Montreal's premier metal promoter. They host one of North America's best Metal Festivals & present countless amazing events during the rest of the year. I am truly honored & extremely excited to have them involved in the podcast. Make sure to check out Vox&Hops' Brewtal Awakenings Playlist which has been curated by the Metal Architect Jerry Monk himself on either Spotify or Apple Music.
